Bechtel Victorian Mansion Bed & Breakfast
Inn
East Berlin (Gettysburg area), Pennsylvania

Located 18 miles east of Gettysburg, in the East Berlin National Historic District, the Bechtel Victorian Mansion Bed & Breakfast Inn is living proof of lifestyle in the late nineteenth century. The mansion was built for the William G. Leas Family in 1897, and the original beauty and craftsmanship is still evident throughout the home: ornately carved fireplaces and mouldings, large pocket doors, built in wardrobe and hutches, and sliding and folding shutters. Ornate brass chandeliers remain in the parlors and dining room. |
The Bechtel Victorian Mansion Inn contains seven bedrooms and two suites, all with private bath and air conditioning. Several rooms feature a private balcony. The new owners of the Inn, Richard and Carol Carlson, are currently redecorating each guestroom in a country Victorian style with antique furnishings, lace curtains, lots of bed pillows and fluffy comforters, and Victorian accessories. Guests feel right at home among Carol's personal collection of porcelain dolls and teddy bears.
Guests of the Inn are treated to a full breakfast each morning, served in either the dining room or the breakfast room. Breakfast includes fresh fruit and juice, homemade breads or muffins, and a hot specialty, such as "Upside-down Apple French Toast." Homemade cookies or cakes await each guest for afternoon or evening tea.

The Balcony Suite (pictured here) features a Victorian walnut bed with carved headboard and footboard. The room is so named for its private balcony that overlooks the flower gardens. Guests can pamper themselves with a bath in the original clawfoot tub, or they can relax in front of the TV in the adjoining sitting room. |
The Sara Leas Room is one of the most romantic rooms in the mansion, with pale pink walls stenciled with roses. The room features a built-in wardrobe with full-length mirror and a sitting area in the turret part of the room. The private bath has a sink mounted in an antique dresser. |
