In 1913, the Federal Government held a fiftieth anniversary reunion at Gettysburg. The boys who had gone off to war had become old men who came together "re-united in brotherly love and affection". | . |
Thousands of survivors bivouacked on the old battlefield, swapping stories, looking up comrades and, as seen here, retracing their steps and seemingly impossible deeds of 50 years earlier. |

Outside of the official ceremonies, there was time for old friends, and old enemies, to relax and talk over old times. |

The climactic moment of the 50th Reunion was a reenactment of Pickett's Charge. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch as the Union veterans took their positions on Cemetery Ridge, and waited as their old adversaries emerged from the woods of Seminary Ridge and started toward them again. They converged as they had 50 years earlier at the stone wall but this time the Confederates were met with embraces of brotherly fellowship. |
