Charles (Chuck) Hillsman is the Confederate commander for the 135th anniversary reenactment. Since first becoming a reenactor in 1979, he has risen through the ranks to the commanding position of Longstreet's Corps. Chuck's great-grandfather, Captain James Hillsman, fought with the 44th VA and was seriously wounded on Sept 17, 1862 at the Battle of Antietam. His deep pride in his heritage and of all reenactors who cherish keeping alive the legacy of the 1860's soldiers compels him to approach reenacting "not as a hobby but as a duty". |

| Reenactors such as these are all unpaid volunteers who devote much of their spare time and disposable income to their hobby. They finance their own training, uniform, equipment and travel expenses. Many develop impersonations of individuals, sometimes their ancestors, living at the time of the Civil War. Just like the real military, they move up in rank by seniority and by displaying leadership qualities. Asked why they do it, many say "to honor those who went before us". | ||
