Pickett's Charge Advance II
Pictures taken July 5, 1998 at the 135th Reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg.
To the high-pitched shrill Rebel yell, 12,000 soldiers emerge from the woods into the open field and begin to march in formation to their destiny. Their goal - a small copse of trees 3/4 of a mile away - the center of the Union line.
Like ghosts from the past, waves of men move slowly and deliberately across the field in close ranks.
Through the reenactors, the spirit of the valiant Civil War soldiers returns and is felt and understood by the 20th century spectators.
The military pageantry is certainly an impressive view as seen from the spectator area behind the Union line.
Still more lines of gray mass approach with drums banging, flags waving, swords pointed and muskets gripped. What the real soldiers must have been thinking as they inched their way toward the Federals.
