During the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1913, 55,000 veterans of the Union and Confederate armies returned to Gettysburg.  During the 75th anniversary in 1938, 8,000 were still living and 1,845 attended the ceremonies.  All these men came together not as northern or southern but as Americans.
