Brian is the author of “Living Monuments: Union Veteran Amputees and the Embodied Memory of the Civil War,” which appeared in Civil War History in June 2011; “We Stand on the Same Battlefield: The Gettysburg Centenary and the Shadow of Race,” which appeared in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography in October 2011; and “Captive Memories: Union Ex-Prisoners of War and the Work of Remembrance,” which appeared in The Civil War Monitor in September 2011. His book, Unholy Sabbath: The Battle of South Mountain in History and Memory, was a selection of the History Book Club.
