long been called ‘Rebels,’ but the American Civil War witnessed one of the
largest rebellions of enslaved people in world history: 200,000 Black men
taking up arms to make the Emancipation Proclamation a reality. This program

Most everyone who knows about the Battle of Gettysburg knows the story of the
Twentieth Maine on the southern slopes of Little Round Top on July 2, 1863.
Yet a more serious threat to the Union line may very well have been on the
northern slopes of Little Round Top. Here elements of five Confederate
brigades numbering upward of 5000 men headed for a hole in the Union line
created when General Sickles decided to move his men forward. Plugging this
hole were elements of the Pennsylvania Reserves and Wheaton’s Brigade of the
Sixth Corps. As one of the Reserves related after the fight, “There cannot be
the least doubt in the minds who knew the exact state of affairs upon the
field at that time, that a few moments delay in our arrival on Little Round
Top, the key of the fields would have been lost and very probably the Battle
of Gettysburg would have closed that night.” Was this the more serious threat
to Little Round Top? Join us and find out. www.gettysburgfoundation.org |
