717-334-6245 About Discoveries in the Shriver Family Attic...

When war invaded their town in the summer of 1863, Gettysburg was a terrible and frightening place for Sadie and Mollie Shriver. They fled their home on Baltimore Street with their mother, Henrietta, and neighbor Tillie Pierce to try and find safety at the Weikert farm, their grandparents homestead. Instead they found themselves in the midst of the violent battle caring for wounded soldiers. Life would never be the same, especially after their father is taken prisoner and dies at Andersonville Prison and their mother remarries.

By the summer of 1867, the Civil War has been over for two years, but is not forgotten. Life is slowly returning to normal. Mama has remarried and Sadie and Mollie have a new baby sister. During their summer vacation, the girls meet Jason and Amy, new neighborhood kids who have moved to Gettysburg from Baltimore.

Sadie and Mollie, along with their friends Jason, Amy, and Tillie, explore their old house that now stands vacant again. What stories and secrets will the children discover in the Shriver attic where two Confederate snipers were killed?

Meet Lucy Cadwallader

Victorian Hair Jewelry

Lucy Cadwallader has a unique way of reaching across time and tying families together.  Through the art of Victorian hair jewelry, Lucy is able to take the hair of loved ones and create intricate pieces of jewelry.  Jewelry of all kinds such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and brooches can be created using human, horse or synthetic hair. American Civil War Museum

297 Steinwehr Avenue
Gettysburg, PA
17325

717-334-6245 Hair jewelry can be dated back to the 1500's. These early pieces were worn to remind people of their mortality. Over the years, hair jewelry has gone in and out of style as many fashions do.  The meaning and symbolism has also changed over time and the jewelry is now a means to keep loved ones close to us. At the time of the American Civil War, hair jewelry became popular once more as women wore the hair of husbands and sons in brooches and lockets, while soldiers may have a watch chain made from the hair of a loved one back at home.

The painstaking process of creating a piece of hair jewelry can take anywhere from 8-10 hours or days depending on the size and detail of the piece. The process begins by sorting the hair, counting the hair, and then tying the strands into groups.  From there the work is done on a circular table with the findings being attached after the piece is set.

Annual Nancy Wilkin's Remembrance Day Bake Sale

Benefits Adams County American Cancer Society

Looking for some hot coffee, tasty treats, or healthy snacks?  Look no further!  The annual Nancy Wilkins Remembrance Day Bake Sale hosted by the Gift Center will once again be set up for the Remembrance Day observance on Saturday, November 21st.  All proceeds benefit the local Adams County chapter of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event.

Over the years the bake sale has grown and become a Remembrance Day tradition.  The growth and success of the sale is largely due to the help of Terria Chernak, wife of sculptor Andrew Chernak and a two- time breast cancer survivor.  Over the past five years since Terria began coordinating the sale, the proceeds have multiplied exponentially! The amount of time and energy Terria devotes to the event is remarkable.  She spends months planning the sale and gathering donations, not to mention recruiting help for the event.

Donations and support for the event come from all around the region.  Many of the much needed supplies and baked goods come from businesses and business owners, personal friends, and frequent visitors! Many of those who volunteer their time and baked goods are cancer survivors. Helpers from all around join together to make the sale a success!  Many of the donors and helpers are members of the American Gold Star Mothers organization for mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country.

The Gift Center has participated in the local Relay for Life event for over five years in honor and memory of friend and co-worker Nancy Wilkins. Over the course of the Gift Center's participation, the team has raised over $13,000 toward the cause.  The event not only helps raise money for research and treatment, it also raises awareness about prevention and detection.

Some of the goodies we'll have for sale include hot coffee, hot apple cider, cakes, brownies, candied apples, cookies, breads, pies, trail mix, and so much more!  The sale will be set up at 9 a.m. on the grounds of the American Civil War Museum and Gettysburg Gift Center.  It will continue throughout the day, during the parade and will wrap up late afternoon or while supplies last!! Come early, and tell your friends!!
