“From the beginning, when I was watching
my children stand mesmerized over Niagara Falls, this project was an exercise
in renewal,” said Leibovitz. “It taught me to see again.” The pictures, although there are no people in them, are in a certain sense portraits of subjects that have shaped Leibovitz’s distinctly American view of her cultural inheritance. Visiting the homes of iconic figures, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Pete Seeger, and Elvis Presley, as well as places such as Niagara Falls, Gettysburg and the Yosemite Valley, she let her instincts guide her to related subjects—hence the title Pilgrimage. “Gettysburg is such an important place in American history,” said Gettysburg Foundation President Joanne M. Hanley. “Millions of people make their own pilgrimage of sorts here every year, to stand on these fields and reflect on the battle of Gettysburg’s effect on our nation—an effect we are still feeling today. The Pilgrimage exhibition helps people understand that Gettysburg is very much relevant in our lives today.” Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage is presented at Gettysburg by the Gettysburg Foundation; the exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Bernie Stadiem Endowment Fund provided support for the exhibition, and the C.F. Foundation of Atlanta supports the museum’s traveling exhibition program, Treasures to Go. The prints were made by David Adamson Editions in Washington, D.C. Gettysburg. From the professional journalist to the local correspondent,

all to get the scoop on the greatest battle ever fought in the Western
Hemisphere. Learn the tools of their trade and trace where the actual
reporters worked on the field; discover who got it right, who got it wrong –
and how these enterprising witnesses to the battle provided the world with its

Meet Lucy Cadwallader Victorian Hair Jewelry |
Lucy Cadwallader has a unique way of reaching across time and tying families together. Through the art of Victorian hair jewelry, Lucy is able to take the hair of loved ones and create intricate pieces of jewelry. Jewelry of all kinds such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and brooches can be created using human, or horse hair. |
Gettysburg Gift Center at the American
Civil War Wax Museum 297
Steinwehr Avenue |
717-334-6245 |
Hair jewelry can be dated back to the
1500's. These early pieces were worn to remind people of their mortality. Over
the years, hair jewelry has gone in and out of style as many fashions do. The
meaning and symbolism has also changed over time and the jewelry is now a
means to keep loved ones close to us. At the time of the American Civil War,
hair jewelry became popular once more as women wore the hair of husbands and
sons in brooches and lockets, while soldiers may have a watch chain made from
the hair of a loved one back at home. The painstaking process of creating a piece of hair jewelry can take anywhere from 8-10 hours or days depending on the size and detail of the piece. The process begins by sorting the hair, counting the hair, and then tying the strands into groups. From there the work is done on a circular table with the findings being attached after the piece is set. |
