717-339-2148 The Color Bearers – the men who carried the flags in battle – were among the highest casualties in the Civil War. In just a few minutes during a battle, not just one, two, or three flag-bearers might fall. Instead, a unit might lose five, six, seven, eight – or more – in that short period of time, a grim accounting that would occur on each day of the Battle. The all-important flag signaled a unit’s movement on the battlefield – but it was also the emotional touchstone to home; to the home where a mother, or a sister, or a sweetheart lovingly stitched the banner. It was to be protected at all costs. And frequently, it was. The actions of the color companies to protect their colors were often heroic, usually deadly, and produced some of the most dramatic stories of the Battle. During this presentation, we’ll spend a little time looking at the origins of the battle flag and the various types of flags used by an army but we’ll dedicate the greater part of the presentation to looking at the men -- and the flags they carried -- and hearing their stories. In the afternoon, we’ll tour parts of the battlefield so that we can stand where the flag-bearers stood in battle. And where they once charged across the field, we’ll walk in their footsteps so that we can, as one veteran put it “tread this consecrated ground with reverent step.”

Registration deadline is September 5, 2014. Open to members and non-members, the cost is $70 members and $95 non-members. Optional boxes lunches are available for pre-order at $12 each.

For more information, please visit www.gettysburgfoundation.org or contact Ann Swade at 717-339-2148 or aswade@gettysburgfoundation.org.

Sculptor Andrew Chernak Beginning his life on March 30, 1950 in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Andrew Chernak became imbued in our Nations history. Andrew was surrounded by sculpture in and around the city of Philadelphia, to the battlefields of Gettysburg and south to our Nations capitol, Washington, D.C. The hallmark of Andrew's work is unapologetic fine detail and accuracy, taking short cuts is not acceptable in any of Andrew's sculptures. When one stops to linger over Andrew's sculpture, taking a deeper look, one will see detail never imagined. A sense of his subject's life is at hand. Gettysburg Gift Center at the Gettysburg Heritage Center

297 Steinwehr Avenue
Gettysburg, PA
17325

717-334-6245 Andrew joined the Army in 1968. Following in the footsteps of his Grandfather and father who served in the Army during WWI, and WWII, respectively. While in Vietnam, Andrew served as an Infantryman, starting as a Pointman, and quickly attained the position of squad leader. He was awarded the Purple Heart twice, the coveted Combat Infantrymans Badge, and five other decorations. Andrew's military experience has given him an edge and sensitivity to acheive detail and accuracy in his works. Having lived history, has empowered Andrew to give his works a realism that cannot be obtained by those who haven't lived it.

Sat 15 8:00pm Living History Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital As part of this year's continuing commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, “Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital" will be presented Saturday evenings in the nave of historic Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg.

Historic Christ Lutheran Church,

30 Chambersburg Street Gettysburg, Pa 17325

717-334-5212 More than 14,000 people have attended Songs and Stories over the past twelve years, enthusiastically endorsing these programs with comments such as, “ … one of the best experiences on our trip... You have managed to educate, provoke thought, and play on our emotions, all the while entertaining us.”

Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital brings to life the true stories of a wounded soldier and the doctors and nurses who worked valiantly to save lives -- both Union and Confederate -- during the Battle of Gettysburg and the following weeks. The experiences of the wounded and their caregivers are presented through poignant readings from the journal of a wounded soldier and the diary of a citizen-nurse who served in this church hospital; through live Civil War-era music, especially the Civil War songs of Stephen Foster; and through the poetry of Walt Whitman, who served as a Civil War nurse for three years. Songs and Stories also includes passages from President Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.
